Sixth graders still need to be read to — for vocabulary, fluency, and the shared cultural reference points the curriculum is built on. Each week gets one 5–15 minute selection, paired to that week's lesson, with discussion prompts ready to use.

How to use the read-aloud cadence

  • Pick a fixed slot — morning meeting, after-lunch transition, or end-of-day wind-down.
  • Read aloud yourself. The student listens with the book closed (this builds listening comprehension, not just reading).
  • Use one of the discussion prompts as an exit ticket — a single sentence is enough.
  • If a week's read-aloud lands during a heavy assessment day, swap with the next week — the order is suggested, not strict.
  • 36 reads total across the year — about 7 hours of shared reading.
