Common Core State Standards — Mathematics (Grade 6)
Mathematics
Grade 6 is the year students step from the world of whole-number arithmetic into the world of algebra. They master ratios and rates, finish fraction division, meet negative numbers, write and solve equations, and start thinking statistically.

If your child can confidently explain a ratio in their own words, solve a one-step equation, and read a graph, they're on track. Watch for fluency with decimals and fractions — gaps here block everything in Grade 7.
For students
By June you'll know how to: write and use ratios, divide fractions, add and subtract negative numbers, write expressions with variables, solve one-step equations, find area and volume, and describe a data set.
Ratios & Proportional Relationships
Sixth grade is where multiplicative thinking takes over from additive thinking. Students learn to reason about ratios, rates, and percents.
The Number System
Students close out fraction division, learn the four operations on decimals, find GCFs and LCMs, and meet negative numbers and the coordinate plane.
Expressions & Equations
Grade 6 is the year algebraic notation begins in earnest. Students write, read, and solve one-step equations and inequalities.
Geometry
Students extend area to triangles and quadrilaterals, find volume of rectangular prisms with fractional edges, and meet 3D nets.
Statistics & Probability
Students learn what a statistical question is, summarize data with center and spread, and display data with dot plots, histograms, and box plots.
